Arabian Canal

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

This 77-acre, 400-unit neighborhood plan is part of the 20-square-mile Arabian Canal City. Taking advantage of the sloping terrain, a series of linear terrace gardens form part of a larger open space network including parks, greens, streets, and paseos. The sunken courtyards of dwelling units trap cool air in summer and maximize solar gain in winter, while the floor plans promote natural cross-ventilation. Cooling towers contribute to these passive systems while adding architectural embellishments throughout the neighborhood. Trellises and plantings shade walkways while water channels and fountains activate parks and greens and regulate ambient temperatures. All housing types are designed as variations on regional traditional architecture with rich wood and stone detailing.
