A retrospective on the 100th anniversary of the 100-inch Hooker Telescope at Mount Wilson Observatory, A Temple of Science explores the scientific, architectural and engineering significance of what was the largest telescope in the world until 1949. Astronomers Edwin Hubble and Milton Humason used the telescope to literally discover the entire universe, discover the first observational evidence for an expanding universe, and lay the first observational foundations for the modern concept of Big Bang Cosmology. As a scientific instrument, the Hooker telescope radically, and forever, altered our conceptual understanding of the universe we live in. Three essays by Stefanos Polyzoides examine the architecture, engineering and construction of this historic structure.
