The Canada Larga Master Plan incorporates a comprehensive sustainability plan. Landscape strategies include the broadest possible approach, including compliance with LEED, site planning with conservation in mind, a view of public right of way and urban runoff from streets as an extension of the natural stream system and its ecology, the use of water-efficient plants, dark sky lighting procedures, sustainable storm water management, general water conservation, capturing roof runoff, and extensive use of permeable pavement.
Similarly, a sustainability framework for the project’s architecture is defined in the Development Code and includes specific approaches to energy, indoor environmental quality and resource conservation. Sustainable design is integrated with each phase of the project, including design, construction and operations. Illustrative diagrams indicate the means of achieving this goal for a variety of building types. The example for single family homes reflects a series of opportunities, including south-facing rooftops for solar, backyard composting, ground-source loops for heating and cooling, deciduous trees shade dwellings, rain barrel, outdoor living space and location within a walk-able community.
